Hot Wheels BattleForce 5 (February 2009 - Present)
Shine of Rainbows (July 2008 - January 2009)
2009 - Demo Reel Breakdown
Compressed Air (Medium Shot):
modeled and textured the egg for previz. rigged the pipes using FK joints and animated the pipes individually with an offset. added an emitter to the pipes and the egg openings - it sprays out multistreak, multipoint, and cloud particles with 3d motion blur.
Compressed Air (Close Up):
layered together 12 passes of multipoint, multistreak, fluids, and overburn with 3d motion blur. comped together in Fusion.
Kryton Informercial:
short informercial about crystals stopping water from traveling through concrete at a microscopic visual point. modeled and textured rocks and crystals. lattice & sphere animated water geo. matched speed of crystals with water movement. rendered it out with baked on occlusion and final gathering. comped together in After Effects.
"Steam Boy" Explosion:
researched a variety of ground, missile, fuel, and underwater explosions. replicated a stylized explosion from the movie Steam Boy. It had pitch dark clouds; dark red mid-center; and a bright pale frackely yellow center. comped together to create a massive looking explosion. added tendrils and rock debris coming out of the blast.
Underwater Explosion:
underwater explosions explodes out then implodes back in because of the massive pressure of water. there were two passes for this explosion. first pass would be the explosion and second pass would be the implosion. a hard surface shell was added to the fluid explosion to give it a feeling that the water is consistently pushing the explosion back in.
Trash Can Integration:
modeled, textured, rigged, and animated the trash can. lit and integrated the bin into a live plate. comped together in Nuke.
Lighting and Rendering Test (One Day):
modeled low poly geo and textured it with basic shaders and images. rendered out multiple passes and comped together in Fusion.
Realflow Jelly:
created a trampoline mesh. animated a sphere with collisions going through the mesh. exported the mesh into maya and textured it with a dialectric shader. rendered and comped together in Fusion.
Instanced Bubbles:
softbody converted lattice nurb spheres affected by a low force turbulence field. instanced the spheres onto a particle emitter - scripted the movement. emitted another set of smaller softbody lattice spheres and multipoint particles.
Microscopic Explosion:
experimented by creating 5 different types of field boxes - drag, turbulence, gravity, vortex, and uniform. scripted and adjusted the properties to add a unique effect to the movement of the particles. created several unique passes and comped together in Fusion.
Hey there, How are you?
My name is Tom Chau, and my major focus is in FX & Compositing. I have 3 years experience in production ranging from television, film, commercial, and games. I enjoy working in a team environment & sharing concepts and ideas. I possess a burning desire to create high quality effects and compositing for you studio needs.
FX - Hanging Mist - Example Workflow
The VFX supervisor directed me to create some hanging mist around the bottom side of the mountain. We shared ideas until we came up with a good concept. The idea was then quickly mocked up roughly on paper. Approved by the director, I then opened up Boujou and began tracking the points in the shot. The camera was imported into Maya, and animated smoke was mapped onto grids. Since we made the smoke animate slowly, we were able to get a fluid like feeling to it. The planes were then animated on the x-axis to make it seem like it's being slowly pushed by the wind. Multiple passes of fog grids had been rendered out and compiled in Nuke. The shot was sent to the director for revisions.
